ISSP sharing educational values help children develop comprehensively
  1. Honesty, caring, respect, responsibility and wisdom are values that are emphasized in training for the comprehensive development of children. Let’s find out information about these values shared by ISSP, one of high quality international schools in Ho Chi Minh City for primary and preschool students, in the below article of TheTips.

Comprehensive development is the process of helping children develop their intellectual, moral, and social qualities at the same time. According to Unicef, in Vietnam, helping children to develop comprehensively is facing many challenges. As is the awareness of parents, the community for comprehensive development for children is limited, there is a lack of standards and environment for comprehensive care.

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training also organized a workshop “Adapting the Child Development Assessment Scale” for children aged 3-5 years old in Vietnam. In which, there are 7 areas that need to be developed for children in this rating scale, including awareness; social emotions; motor; language and literacy; personal health, hygiene and safety; cultural understanding and participation; access to learning.

In addition to building a curriculum framework according to the areas of the Early Childhood Development scale, educational institutions also focus on many other core criteria. At International school Saigon Pearl (ISSP), the values focused by this unit are to educate children comprehensively including caring, responsibility, honesty, respect and wisdom.

    • Honesty: Honesty is being upright, honest, telling the truth, not falsifying the truth for a certain purpose. Accordingly, a comprehensive educational program must help students develop honesty and integrity throughout their studies as well as apply them to daily life activities.
    • Caring: Learners must demonstrate care and compassion through all interactions with family, friends, and the social community. This is also the basic expectation and important goal of educators for comprehensive development.
    • Respect: Learners develop respect by cultivating their own integrity and responsibility, thereby accepting and appreciating the differences of others. Respect is also shown in behavior towards oneself, the community and the natural environment.
    • Responsible: In comprehensive development education, learners build a sense of responsibility through the pursuit of personal passions; have a commitment to study, rise as well as learn to persevere with the set goals.
    • Wisdom: Wisdom is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, etc. of oneself. A person’s wisdom is often associated with justice, compassion, morality, and benevolence.

Ms. Tiffany Proctor, Vice Principal of International School Saigon Pearl (ISSP) in Ho Chi Minh City highly appreciates the confidence, creativity and innovation, leadership and initiative of a comprehensive and balanced education. At ISSP, opportunities are created for all students at the school, at all levels, to enable learners to take initiative and develop better minds.

“We aim to boost students’ efforts, encourage progress in learning, move from knowledge to understanding and become wisdom,” said Ms. Tiffany.

In the comprehensive educational program, ISSP also focuses on encouraging learners’ passion for learning and inquisitive spirit. Along with that is to honor the success, the values that learners achieve in all efforts, including in developing skills to take increasing responsibility for their learning or improving their behavior.

At ISSP, the credible international school in Ho Chi Minh City, students will learn with inquiry-based methods. The school encourages students to ask questions and learn based on big concepts, which integrate a variety of topics in the same subject. Students can then connect different concepts, relate what they learn to the world around them, thereby making the right decisions for themselves, necessary for outstanding growth. The school also implements a personalized curriculum to fit the learning needs of each student.

In order to enhance compassion and empathy for the community and society, International School Saigon Pearl has organized many charity and extra-curricular activities, creating practical experiences for students. For example, the school also implements a project to grow rice and harvest rice through the Outdoor Education program, helping students understand the importance and value of rice grains from field to table. This activity aims to help children discover their hidden abilities and practice soft skills needed in life.

As a candidate school teaching the International Baccalaureate Primary Year Program (IB PYP), ISSP also incorporates 10 standards of the IB framework into its curriculum. IB standards include being inquirers and knowledgeable; knowing how to think deeply as thinkers; being good at communication; being principled; being open-minded; being caring; daring to take risk and balance, and being reflective and knowing how to consider. The above qualities are formed and developed through the school’s curriculum and teaching methods.

The ISSP representative believes that, by applying the IB PYP program framework, along with the core values of comprehensive development for children, the school’s students will be able to cultivate skills, knowledge and emotions at the same time in the learning process.

“The balance in academic, physical, creativeness, sociality and emotions, and technology for children are the qualities that help children develop comprehensively,” said a representative of ISSP.
