ISSP sharing that parents and teachers should control emotions when teaching children
  1. When children are disobedient and unruly, many parents and teachers tend to use spanking to solve them. However, that is not a positive way to teach children. It needs to be changed to have a better young generation in thinking. In this article, ISSP, a high quality and outstanding Saigon international school, will share some information about how the emotions of children are affected by parents and teachers as well as how to teach children effectively.

When parents scold and punish with spanking, children will form a distant mindset between those who are punished and those who have authority. Thus, it will be difficult for parents to be the companion and guide their children in the process of growing up and developing. In particular, children aged 2 to 11, when overstimulated, will tend to run away or protest with violence, refusing to receive education.

    Adult emotions influence children’s behaviors

Lester Stephens, Principal of International school Saigon Pearl (prestigious Saigon international school in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the relationship between parents and children greatly affects the way children see themselves and the world around them as well as their cognitive development.

According to Mr. Lester, in research on child-teaching methods, the world has two main views on how to raise children. Firstly, teaching children by the method of restorative justice, teachers and parents focus on the relationship between themselves and children to guide and share for children to understand when they make mistakes. When children are put in a relationship with adults, environment and facilities, children understand the relationship between themselves and the world around them, creating a sense of responsibility in children.

Second, the majority, people behave in a parenting style that punishes, focuses more on principles, wants children to be in the framework, makes children feel inferiority complex and guilty. If a child does not comply with the requirements, he or she will be punished by hitting, scolding, etc.

Each method will have a different impact on children, with positive parenting methods helping them in shaping their character. As for reprimanding, children will feel angry and have a tendency to retaliate. The change of emotions will affect behavior.

According to neuroscience, the brain is divided into 3 main regions including the natural reflex zone, the area of emotional development, and the area of conscious thinking. In the case of overstimulation, the body and brain will be in the natural reflex zone, motionless or running, fighting.

“Emotions of parents and teachers directly affect children, their ability to activate their natural reflex zones and children are the same. When children are hit, scolded, emotions will become angry, blood pouring from the conscious thinking area to the natural reflex area, making children afraid, not ready to receive information, not continue to learn “- Mr. Lester shared information.

    Giving scientific punishment

Mr. Nathan, a teacher at International School Saigon Pearl, one of credible Saigon international schools, recommends that parents spend time talking to their children about their values, explaining the reasons why when parents make requests for their children. When a child commits a mistake, parents together with him or her analyze the mistake, sit down and talk with a child to find out the cause of the behavior.

“Children do nasty things over and over again, parents’ anger and frustration can build up. Sometimes they can’t help being upset but try to stay calm. The goal of education is long-term personality development, if a child adheres to fear of being punished, it can have a negative effect on a child’s adulthood,” said Mr. Nathan.

Additionally, Mr. Nathan says that no matter the age of a child, it is important to be consistent when it comes to discipline. If parents or teachers don’t follow the rules they set, the kids won’t be able to do the same. Children need consistency. When parents force their children to do something, they must also be able to do it, being a role model for children to follow. More importantly, everyone involved in teaching children must agree on the requirements and punishments for a child.

Ms. Huynh Thi Nga – primary school teacher in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City – gives the view that teaching children to develop comprehensively, parents and teachers need to control the “nagging” or repeating negative comments not good for children. Instead, there should be a commitment, set limits with children on what can and cannot be done, and practice self-discipline.

    Children need guidance

According to Mr. Lester Stephens, an environment where teachers and parents practice positive parenting methods form a very good relationship between children, parents and teachers. Therefore, parents and teachers need to stay calm when teaching children, control their emotions to offer positive solutions to children’s mistakes. Besides, parents and teachers should give specific instructions and requirements for children, for example, if parents or teachers want a child to make the bed neatly, they need to make their bed neat, etc.
